PETERHEAD Academy staff and pupils said farewell to a number of members of staff who between them have given the school more than 280 years of service.
Some of the town’s well-known teachers had their final day at the school last week before taking early retirement and head teacher Susan Ramsden wished them all well.
Some of the longest serving members finished up at the school including Peter Scott, teacher of physical education and Alan McKenzie, teacher of modern languages.
Peter, who began working at the school in 1976, told the Buchanie: “I’m looking forward to doing more gardening, fishing and cycling in my spare time. As well as taking in and putting out the washing for my wife!
“I have many great memories at the school here and I’ve had some great laughs with both the staff and pupils. I’ll miss the kids especially.”
The school also said farewell to the entire staff team of the art department. Anne Crawford, Wilma Durward, Mary Torrance and Mike McIntyre handed in their paintbrushes, leaving with more than 100 years of teaching experience between the four of them.
Mrs Torrance told the Buchanie: “We have some marvellous teachers taking on the roles, we wish them all the best of luck.”
Phil McMillan, principal teacher of drama who has not only provided the school with teaching but the community with amazing school shows, also retired after working at the school for 21 years.
Guidance teachers Stan Cordiner and Anne Whalley who between them have worked 68 years took early retirement as well.
Depute head teacher for the new fourth year group, Bill Robertson, retired after working at the school for 18 years. Beginning as principal teacher for English, Bill took up the DHT position in 1999.
“I’ll be doing more golfing, hill walking, reading and cooking! I have many good memories, especially from the kids. My year group has been wonderful and I’ll certainly miss them,” he sid.
The school also said farewell to other members of staff who have taken on new positions, and completed their probation year at the school.
Mrs Ramsden said: “I would like to thank the members of staff for their service to Peterhead Academy and wish them every success in the future.”
