S5 pupils at Peterhead Academy presented donations to a number of charities recently.
The money was raised through the Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) which is sponsored by the Wood Group Family Trust.
The YPI has been part of the S5 PSE programme for the last four years and has been extremely successful with over £12,000 being awarded to local charities within the local community.
Pupils work in teams to research the needs of their community and identify a local charity they believe is best placed to make a positive change.
Team Buchan were this year’s winners and their chosen charity, Joseph’s Storehouse, received £3,000.
The other charities - The Archie Foundation, Dial-a-Bus, Fishermen’s Mission, RNLI and Sands - each received £200.
This year a judging panel member from Harry Fraser Catering Services, Peterhead Football Club, donated £450 to be divided amongst the charities and Duotool Direct have pledged to support the YPI grant for the foreseeable future.
The YPI programme aims to develop community leaders and give pupils a hands-on experience of philanthropy.
Through participation in this programme, pupils develop the skills and awareness to make a positive difference to their community.
Many pupils go on to work on a voluntary basis for the charity they have represented and build a strong connection with the people they have worked with.
Pupils also develop their teamwork, communication and presentation skills, evaluation, research and investigation skills, written and oral skills, while assisting others and their community.
