Mintlaw Academy pupils have taken second place in this year’s Be Your Best Rock Challenge in Aberdeen.

Mintlaw Academy performed ‘Venomous Vanity’ and transported the audience to Ancient Greece, with their costumes and scenery working harmoniously to ensure a great effect.

Medusa’s journey to rid herself of Goddess Athena’s terrible curse was theatrical, intense and driven by an energy that did not falter once during the whole eight minutes.

The school also picked up a host of other accolades including Award of Excellence for Choreography, Performance Skill, set design and function, visual enhancement, entertainment, lighting and stage crew.

Peterhead Academy opened the show with their spectacular showcase performance ‘Claire.’

A beautifully hand-crafted set of flats immediately created a sense of grandeur to the piece before Peterhead Academy’s incredibly poignant and powerful production began.

Due to their success in previous years Peterhead Academy automatically qualified to the Northern Premier Final in Grimsby Auditorium in July.

The status of a premier team is an incredibly prestigious accolade and Peterhead is only one of two Scottish teams to have achieved this prestige.

Commenting on the show, the Lord Provost of Aberdeen, Cllr George Adam, said: “I loved all the performances and just enjoyed seeing all the young people putting everything into it. They were professional performances, professionally staged and you can see how much they enjoyed it.The results are just brilliant.”

The AECC event attracted an audience of more than 1,500.
