Pupils from Peterhead’s Dales Park School got busy digging and planting at their new allotment recently.
The school accepted the allotment that was offered by Peterhead Allotment Association as an educational resource and pupils wasted no time in getting to grips with the land.
The Allotment project had a ‘Wish List’ which combined to maximise the educational opportunities presented by having the Allotment.
Following meetings in October 2014 and January 2015, Peterhead Community Council contacted local several local companies in an effort to assist the School.
Many thanks are due to Robertson Builders, Ross Brothers Landscaping and Claymore Homes for making practical contributions to the project.
The school allotment now has disabled access, rotivated soil, raised beds to suit wheelchair users, and has a pledge to install a ‘Fit for Purpose’ greenhouse that will enable disabled access, and house the technologies required to demonstrate ‘Renewables Energy’ to the pupils.
Following Peterhead Community Council’s contact with Aberdeenshire Council, a special dispensation for a large greenhouse has been granted, in order to overcome allotment lease constraints.
However, for a variety of reasons, the greenhouse has still to be installed.
Several allotment holders have volunteered time, effort and plants to help the school, and it is hoped that the greenhouse will be in place in the near future.
