Councillors at the Buchan Area Committee agreed that a new traffic order should be put in place outside Mintlaw Primary School.

Committee members authorised the construction of a new layby point outside the school to alleviate concerns for the safety of pupils being dropped off an collected from the school earlier this year.

Now the layby is ready to use, councillors were asked to agree plans to introduce a 45 minute prohibition of waiting from 8am to 5pm on weekdays.

The traffic order will ensure that there are no vehicles parking in the layby for more than 15 minutes in any hour, thus limiting on-street parking and allowing free flow of traffic, particularly at peak periods at the start and end of the school day.

Speaking at the meeting held on Tuesday, September 16, councillor Norman Smith said: “We need to get this in place now, the school is working hard and everything is going as it should.”

Fellow councillor Jim Ingram said: “The traffic order is going to benefit everyone.

“The police are finding enforcing the new road regulations somewhat of a problem but by creating the layby, we’ve managed to stop traffic meeting head on.

He added: “I welcome the scheme and believe it is an essential part of the programme.”

A four week statutory consultation will now be held, followed by a 21 day public consultation.
