A recent visit to Maud Playgroup and Rising 5s, by HM inspectors has seen ‘confident and happy children who are keen to learn’.

A report on the inspection of the Buchan school, which was carried out earlier this month, also stated that the playgroup had caring staff who provided a supportive and welcoming environment for children and families.

It also noted the positive relationships between children, staff and parents.

Inspectors said staff involved children in planning their learning through using ‘floor books’.

They have asked staff to build on this and further developlearning conversations with children.

“This will help children to be more involved in recognising and recording their achievements.

They said children thoroughly enjoyed working
outdoors collecting large and small leaves.

“Staff have correctly recognised the neeto further develop learning outdoors.

The report continues: “Overall, the playgroup satisfactorily supports children to develop and learn.

“Staff are kind and caring and interact positively to support children in their play. They know children’s likes and dislikes and are responsive to their interests.

“Good use is made of the local community to enrich children’s experiences.

“Staff are at the very early stages of using national guidance to planlearning.

“They now need to further develop their understanding of Curriculum for Excellence.

“Staff are committed to bringing about improvements to the playgroup.

“Throughout the inspectionstaff were very receptive to any advice and guidance suggested.”

Inspectors have now agreed that the playgroup should develop the curriculum in line with Curriculum for Excellent and that it should provide focused professional development opportunities to help staff take forward the improvement agenda.

The playgroup also needs to further develop self-evaluation to lead to improved children’s learning.

Inspectors will return to Maud Playgroup to carry out a further inspection within one year.
