A real Rags to Riches story

Every Wednesday lunchtime, for the last few months, a group of Mintlaw Academy pupils and staff have been busy converting ‘rags to riches’.

With a very kind donation of unwanted Laura Ashley patchwork materials, a beautiful quilt and matching cushions have been crafted.

Making the quilt involved group decision making and planning plus many hours of hard graft but all very enjoyable and worthwhile.

Patchwork is an old craft made in the spirit of ‘waste not, want not’.

In keeping with this ethos, the single bed sized quilt was stuffed with a duvet made from recycled plastic bottles!

Pupils involved decided to raffle the quilt and matching cushions and to give the proceeds to the Red Cross.

Raffle tickets are being sold around school by members of the Charities Committee and at the school office.

A Senior member of staff will draw the raffle this week.

All pupils are welcome to head along to this lunch club and make an item for themselves or to help with the next group project for charity which will be a blanket made out of men’s ties.

Pupils will be writing to famous folk to ask them if they would like to donate their unwanted ties.

All ties will be gratefully accepted and can be handed in to the reception.
