A Peterhead couple celebrated their Diamond wedding anniversary last week marking 60 years together.
James and Elizabeth Mennie received a visit from councillor Stuart Pratt who gave them a card, bouquet of flowers and bottle of whisky on behalf of Aberdeenshire Council.
They married at Peterhead’s Palace Hotel on February 26, 1954 and Elizabeth said: “It was a beautiful day, just like today.”
James, 89, recalled: “The next day was full of snow and we had to take a bus up to Dornoch for our Honeymoon.”
Elizabeth, 85, added: “We married on the Friday and we had friends marry on the Saturday and Monday so they got the snow, we were lucky.”
The couple have lived in Peterhead since.
James was an engineer and once worked at Wisemans on Broad Street while Elizabeth was a civil servant.
The couple have a son called Gordon and two granddaughters who live in Perthshire.
They met in Aberdeen as James lived there and Elizabeth worked in the city during the week.
James said: “It was love at first sight for me.”
The couple celebrated their anniversary by having lunch on Sunday at the Palace Hotel with friends and family.
Elizabeth said: “We have good neighbours here so we invited them all along as a thank you for all their help.”
Cllr Pratt said: “James and Elizabeth are a lovely couple and it is a privilage to be with them on their special day.”
