A LOCAL professional storyteller visited Peterhead Prison recently to read extracts from a book to inmates and staff.

As part of World Book Night, the Blacksmith’s daughter, Helen Macdonald, received 20 books to give away to those who don’t read often.

Helen said: “This year, I took the books to Peterhead Prison, storytelling and reading extracts from ‘The Secret Scripture’ to a group of inmates and staff.”

Helen will be returning in a few weeks for a discussion about the book.

Helen said: “The main character is incarcerated in a medical institution for social reasons.

“Gradually her life story is revealed through her writings.

“The time has come for the institution to close and the woman is being assessed by a psychiatrist in order to place her out in the community.”

Speaking about her visit, Helen said: “It was a great morning full of stimulating discussion and attentive listening.

“I am really looking forward to my return visit and hearing their impressions.

Helen added: “I’m hoping to inspire the inmates to look at their own history and find a way of valuing their ancestors, themselves and find their own way of passing on a story. Literacy not required, just a voice!”
