A BUCHAN care home has helped to create a lasting memory for one of its residents.

Culsh House Care Home, located just outside New Deer, created its Wish Upon a Star programme two years ago and now - for the second year running - has been able to grant one of its residents’ wishes.

Sandy Michie, who celebrated his 67th birthday last week, has a keen interest in politics, and enjoys to sit and watch the latest goings-on in Parliament on the television, and it was his wish to make the trip to Edinburgh to see it for himself.

Culsh House manager Alison Matthew, explained how the programme was set up: “It was senior carer, Gwen Duncan’s idea to create a well of wishes and allow the residents to wish for something achievable.

“This is our second successful wish now after a resident visited the Alford Transport Museum last year, complete with a ride in a race car.

“As long as the wish is achievable we’ll try our hardest to see it through and we encourage the residents who are able to, to use it.

“We wouldn’t be able to do this if it wasn’t for the support we have from the Friends of Culsh, a committee set up by past and present residents’ friends and family, who spend their spare time fundraising for luxuries like this.”

Sandy, who is originally from New Aberdour, visited Parliament on June 15 and after spending two hours in the debating chambers was invited to First Minister Alex Salmond’s office for a chat.

Alison added: “It was thanks to staff nurse Wayne Riddell that Sandy’s wish came true. Wayne also allows the residents to make day trips by driving our hired minibus, which means they remain a very strong part of the nearby community as well as getting them out and about.”

A photograph was taken on Sandy’s trip and was framed and presented to him by local GP Dr Patil during his birthday celebrations last week.

His friends and family joined him for an afternoon of entertainment provided by David Forbes as well as cake.
