A new Peterhead-based e-commerce store was launched recently.
The new website, called The Croft House, went live less than two weeks ago, but has been 12 months in the planning.
The Croft House specialises in Scottish and Irish-made knitwear, accessories and gifts. The business was set up by Louise Hepworth, who lives in Inverugie.
Louise worked in retailing throughout the UK for many years. However, after ten years in her previous job she was made redundant. A simultaneous move to Inverugie prompted her to explore new options for her career.
Louise, who is originally from Aberdeen, heard of the closure of a local woollen mill and used this as inspiration to set up a new retail business.
The Croft House has been set up with a number of important key principles in mind: promoting quality wool-based products; using natural, locally sourced materials which come from as close to Aberdeenshire as possible; high manufacturing ethics; promoting a low carbon footprint; a low environmental impact whereby only recyclable or biodegradable packaging is used to deliver items; and supporting good causes, as every time a credit or debit card purchase is made on The Croft House website a contribution is made to the charity Scottish Epilepsy.
Commenting, Louise said: “I’m very excited about it. Lanching the website has been a lot of hard work but such an achievement.
“We’ve had hits from around the world including Japan, America and all over Europe.
“We have taken traditional elements such as Fair Isle, Harris Tweed and Arran knits but given them a contemporary spin to bring products to market which fit with today’s modern lifestyles.
“By being web-based we hope to develop a customer base throughout the UK, Europe and Worldwide with the aim of promoting the fantastic quality and craftsmanship of our Scottish products.”
Commenting on future plans, Louise added: “We want to grow the business and become an employer. We would also like to look into bigger premises.”
Louise currently runs The Croft House by herself but with the support of family members. Before setting up the business, Louise worked in a number of retail outlets, including House of Fraser, Debenhams and Selfridges.
