Peterhead’s Morrisons store has given one lucky staff member the role of Community Champion.
Sheena Irvine was recently given the title which involves getting the Morrisons store included in the community, whether that be with fundraising for local charities or simply spreading the word about upcoming events.
Around 500 Morrisons stores nationwide will name their own Community Champions. Each will receive a folder containing helpful guides and the Peterhead store has been honoured as a case study in it for all its fundraising efforts in the last few years.
Previous fundraising events showcased in the guide includes ‘The Big Splash’ which was held at the Lido and raised £500 for Save the Children, as well as pictures and details from various other events.
The store also played a part in getting garden designer and TV presenter, Diarmuid Gavin, to visit Clerkill and Longside schools to inspire pupils to get growing.
As part of the job, Sheena can give schools, nurseries and community groups a tour of the store’s different departments to explain where the food comes from and how it is made.
She can also visit rural schools for a talk if they are unable to visit.
The Peterhead store now has its own Community Noticeboard for charity groups to place posters for upcoming local events.
Sheena said: “If anyone wants to hold a charity bag pack or needs raffle prizes, please drop a letter in addressed to me and we will try our best to accommodate your request.
“If you have a poster you would like to place on our noticeboard, please send it to me at the store and we will be happy to support it.”
Charitable organisations can use the store’s training room or cafe as a meeting point but requests have to be made at least two weeks in advance.
Morrisons’ latest community campaign, ‘Let’s Grow’, launched yesterday (Monday, August 19) and is encouraging schools, nurseries and childminding groups to collect vouchers to be exchanged for various pieces of garden and baking equipment.
Now in its sixth year, the campaign has given over £14 million worth of equipment to schools across the UK.
