Four stalwarts of North-east farming are to be honoured with Royal Northern awards for outstanding service to the agricultural industry.
The awards will be presented at the Royal Northern Agricultural Society’s annual awards lunch in the Aberdeen Airport Thistle Hotel on Friday, November 1.
Recipient of the Press and Journal Shield for public service is Charlie Adam, Braeside, Cushnie, Alford, who is currently serving his third year as chairman of NFU Scotland’s North-east regional board.
The Aberdeen and Northern Marts award for service on a more local basis goes to Dr Ian Edwards, who joined Aberdeen University as a lecturer in 1976 and has continued as emeritus senior lecturer following the closure of the university’s department of agriculture two years ago.
The David Argo Award for an “unsung hero” will be presented to Harry Thomson (74), whose Thomson of Sauchen livestock haulage business, now run by his son, Eric, has been providing a service to North-east farmers since it was founded by his father in 1929, and the under-35 award, sponsored by SRUC, goes to 27 year old Huntly butcher, Gary Raeburn, three-times winner of the Scottish Young Butcher of the Year award and a former UK Young Butcher of the Year.
Recipients of the prestigious Royal Northern awards are selected from nominations made by local agricultural organisations and supported by a detailed citation.
“The judging panel had a most difficult task because of the high calibre of the nominations,” said RNAS president, Colin Booth.
“The four recipients are worthy winners and a credit to the North-east farming industry.”
Mr Adam, who graduated in agriculture from Edinburgh University and runs a herd of 100 beef suckler cows on his 340 acre farm, said he was “extremely flattered” to be recognised with a Royal Northern award.
The citation in support of his nomination states: “Charlie deserves special recognition for all the additional work he does representing North-east farmers.
“ His debating technique is not to thump the table and shout loudest but that of reasoned argument backed up by facts and figures.”
