Longside Gala 2013 has been hailed a success as residents came out in force to celebrate and take part in the different activities on offer.

The gala took place over the weekend of May 16 to May 19, and despite the poor turn in weather, all the events went ahead and hours of fun was had. Thursday, May 16 saw the return of the popular duck race in the Cairngall Burn and in the evening, the Garioch Blend dance band and Eddie Rose played a concert at Longside Parish Church. A range of games were played throughout the day on Friday, followed by ‘The Gig’ at night, featuring performances by The Trade, Hard Cash & The Folsoum Four and Velvet Audio.

Saturday’s main gala day began with a parade from Theatre Modo and the Anne Buchan Dance School, where the gala princesses were escorted to the main arena for the official opening by Gordon Hay and crowning of Gala Princesses Morgan Anderson and Katie Wink.

There was five-a-side football fun all afternoon, while on the outdoor stage, the Caroline McGruther Highland dancers, Skip 2 The Beat, the Anne Buchan Dancers and Zumba with Rhonda Ferrier kept the crowds entertained.

The final gala day featured Let’s Get Ready To Rumble, a series of games held at the football park.

Longside Gala organiser, councillor Norman Smith spoke after the fun-filled weekend: “On the whole it went well without any issues which was a bonus. We were lucky with the weather on day one but then it started to rain so we moved into the large marquee.”

He added: “We had a successful Saturday, the sun was out and the weather totally changed so we had a super day. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who organised and participated and we look forward to next year’s gala.”
