Honorary award for Mason Bill
Buchanhaven man Bill Buchan has been given an honorary award for his work in the Freemasons over his 66-year membership.
Bill joined the Freemasons in 1946 and was the youngest Master of Lodge Keith No 56 in Peterhead from 1955-56.
The Longside resident was honoured as part of his work as an almoner.
Fellow mason Douglas Nicol said: “For the last 13 years since 1999 he has been Provincial Grand Almoner. The almoner is responsible for visiting the sick and helping masons or their dependants who have hit hard times apply for grants from the Benevolence Committee of Grand Lodge of Scotland.”
“As he did this very well indeed he received the honour of Honorary Past Depute Provincial Grand Master from the Provincial Grand Master of Aberdeenshire East William Grant. This award is rarely given and requires the approval of the Grand Master Mason in Grand Lodge--Charles Wolrige-Gordon of Esselmont. As well as the award he received an inscribed quaich.”
“I worked with him as Provincial Grand Secretary and found him to be a most caring and dedicated individual who was excellent at finding brethren in need and bringing them to the attention of others. He was an excellent visitor and truly empathic.”
Bill said: “It was such a suprise that I received the honour. I knew nothing about it until I was awarded it at the meeting. I never thought I would receive anything like this.”
“My family are all very proud of me including my wife Margaret.”
“My father was in the masons, my brother-in- law and nephews too. I wanted to know where my dad was going and what it was all about so decided to join. It just interested me, the more you out in the more you get out of it.”
Bill joined the RAF on Christmas Eve 1943 when he was just seventeen and a half. He was training to be a navigator but was transferred to the Army in March 1945.
Bill has had various jobs over the years and says “I’ll try anything once”.
“The longest job I had was in the Navy I joined in 1960 until I retired. But then I ended up in the oil industries for some years.”
