Bio event at Haddo

A SPECIAL event aimed at recording as much of Haddo Country Park’s diverse wildlife over a 24-hour period will be held later this month.

The North East Scotland Biodiversity Partnership has organised a BioBlitz to take place at the park on Saturday, June 23, aimed at raising awareness of biodiversity and particularly biological recording.

Open to the public from 10am to 6pm, a programme of activities will run throughout the day, including a nature treasure hunt, guided walks and story-telling.

Many regional species experts will also be taking part in recording and there will be a number of stalls from conservation organisations such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the Forestry Commission.

The public event will finish with some of the experts attempting the Biodiversity Challenge quiz.

Councillor Rob Merson, chair of the Formartine Area Committee, said: “This event is a great way for families to get involved and learn about local biodiversity.”

Vice-chair of the committee, Councillor Paul Johnston, added: “This is a perfect event for the park to host and I am sure that BioBlitz will be a fun, hands-on way for children to learn about the environment which surrounds them.”

Rose Toney, the Partnership’s co-ordinator said: “Although some wildlife does require expert identification, many others can be identified by anyone – with a little practice.

“We hope the BioBiltz will encourage more people to become active wildlife recorders and help us get a much more accurate and up-to-date picture of Grampian’s wildlife.”

Free parking is available at the park on the day and a free shuttle bus service will also be available between Aberdeen and Haddo Country Park.

All activities will depart from the Visitor Services Portacabin, apart from the Biodiversity Challenge Quiz and the story-telling sessions, which take place in the marquee.

Anyone requiring more details and to book for events or the bus shuttle service, go to www.nesbiodiversity.org.uk or contact Rose Toney at rose.toney@hutton.ac.uk.
