Mission puts finishing touches to Harbour Open Day preparations
the fishermen’s Mission in Peterhead has been busy preparing for its annual Open Day, to be held on Saturday, August 11 from 10.30am to 4pm.
The community-orientated day, which boasts a full programme of activities, takes around nine months of the year to plan and prepare for.
This year, Peterhead Pipe Band will be playing at the event, which is now in its 18th year.
In a first for Peterhead, a Nimrod cockpit will be on display for visitors to investigate, while in the south harbour near the ice plant, visitors will be able to explore a whitefish trawler.
There will also be the opportunity for members of the public to see the Boothby and Prunier trophies, which will be on display at a special stall run by former skipper Andrew Duncan.
“All relevant information on both trophies, as well as photographs and details on all those who have won it will be at the stall,” said Mr Duncan.
“There will also be folk there to answer any questions people might have regarding these two items
This year’s event will be opened by Professor Sir Lewis Ritchie alongside Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire Joyce Mackie and chair of the Mission Council Jill Henderson.
Commenting on the open day, Mission Superintendent George Power said: “I think the preparations are on firm ground.
“There will be something for everyone and we hope everyone will come along. Every year we attempt to add something different to the programme.”
Assistant Superintendent Paul Govier added: “We would like to thank everyone who has been invloved so far. We couldn’t do it without the local advisory council, the Mission ladies support group, the Rotary Club in Peterhead and all the other volunteers who put in so much hard work.
“We would also like to thank all the retailers for donations including fish, barbecue produce and bakery supplies for our refreshments stall.”
This will be George and Paul’s last year of organising the popular event, both moving on to pastures new.
They added: a“The Fishermen’s Mission is a vital service which is available to all fishermen and the wider fishing community.
“It’s presence in Peterhead is simply a reflection of the huge support it has received over the years.”
