Retired skipper’s tales enjoyed at Probus Club

After fifty years at sea, what does a man turn his attention to – a worthwhile hobby!

This is exactly what retired skipper Alex Strachan did when he left the sea.

Instead of bemoaning the fact of nothing to do, Alex set about learning the skills required in model boat-building.

Alex recently gave Peterhead Probus Club a very informative and entertaining talk on how he got started, the advice he sought and the lessons he learned from the many mistakes made.

As a member of the Tarlair Model-boat Club, Alex explained how the question of the future of Tarlair was very much in the public eye at present with varying proposals being put forward to return Tarlair Pool to its former glory.

With the help of models brought, Alex explained how the process of making a model fishing boat was carried, how parts were obtained, the difficulties of painting the water-line and how costly many former models were in insurance terms.

It was obvious that among the Probus audience there were many ‘young boys’ remembering their own model-making days and being youngsters among the fishing fleet. The next meeting of the season for Peterhead Probus Club takes place in the Palace Hotel today (Tuesday), at 10am with guest speaker Jim Farish, Governor-designate of HMP Grampian.
