‘Peterhead when you were a Kid’ storms Facebook

A PAIR of Peterhead mums are celebrating after a new Facebook page gathered more than 1,500 members in just one week.

Carol-Anne Murphy and Judi Alexander, both 43, set up the ‘Peterhead when you were a Kid’ page just ten days ago in they hope that townsfolk would share pictures and memories of the town.

They were shocked and delighted when 1,780 people from the town and from around the world signed up, contributing more than 2,000 old pictures.

“I knew Judi had lots of old pictures,” says mum of five Carol-Anne, “but I didn’t think there would be much interest. We set the page up on the Friday and by Tuesday we had more than 500 members. It’s just been overwhelming.”

Facebook users from around Buchan and from as far afield as Brazil and Canada have logged on to the page to share stories and reminincise, tagging old friends in pictures and remembering old shops and streets.

“There’s a guy in Canada who’s been leaving comments in Doric,” says Judi, “and his Canadian friends don’t have a clue what he’s talking about. He says he’s writing in Doric and listening to Waves FM and feels right at home!”

But more than just a trip down memory lane, the page has got people talking about what can be done to improve the town.

“A lot of people have been saying tha they want to get the heart back into the town,” says former Peterhead Academy pupil Judi. “There’s nothing here now and shops are lying empty. There is money here but people are going into Aberdeen to spend it.”

“People want to take pride in the town again,” says Carol-Anne, who is originally from Macduff but has lived in the town for many years. “The page shows that there is interest. We want the young people to join, read some of the stories and see how the town used to be. Kids don’t spend time talking to their Grannies anymore so this is a great way to pass on stories.”
