Keenan supports energy project

A North-east organics recycling company is supporting a group of local students in a national project focussing on energy use in the classroom.

Keenan Recycling, based at New Deer, has teamed up with a group of students from Turriff Academy as a part of the Go4Set initiative.

Go4Set raises awareness of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and helps young people make informed decisions about their options for further study.

The project is run throughout the UK, including eight regions of Scotland.

The project sees teams of 12 to 14 year-olds work with teachers and mentors from the energy industry on ten-week projects.

This year, students were tasked to research the benefits of installing biomass boilers in their schools, looking into environmental and cost-effective factors of the renewable products.

Keenan Recycling transforms food and garden waste into British Standard Industry compost at its £5m award-winning site.

Earlier this year, Keenan unveiled a £1.3m expansion securing its spot as the largest vertical composting unit site in the world.

Managing director of Keenan Recycling, Grant Keenan, has mentored pupils throughout the project, providing coaching to a team of five during visits to the academy, and hosting them on a visit to his recycling facility.

Mr Keenan said: “I am delighted to be working on the Go4Set project for a second year.

“I’m very keen to get young people interested in environmental aspects of learning at an early age, and this initiative is a fantastic way to gain interest in the industry.”

The Turriff Academy students presented their findings at a Celebration and Assessment Day at Robert Gordon University on February 7, where a winner was announced among seven other participating Aberdeenshire schools.
