Wintry blast causes chaos on Buchan’s roads
SNOW and ice at the end of the week brought chaos to Buchan’s roads, with several accidents reported.
Huge tailbacks formed on the main Peterhead to Aberdeen road on Wednesday as motorists struggled with the icy conditions.
Police had to deal with a number of ocllisions including one which involved one of their own patrol cars.
The vehicle was involved in a smash on the Crimond to New Leeds road, with two officers requiring medical attention.
The female driver of the other vehicle involved, a grey Volkswagen Golf, had to be cut free by firefighters but was not seriously injured.
It is believed that both drivers lost control on the untreated unclassified road just before 1pm on Wednesday.
A spokeswoman for Grampian Police said: “Because of the icy condtions the road was closed to the public so that it could be properly treated.
“The officers were not responding to an emergency at the time of the incident.”
Meanwhile, the A90 was closed at Toll of Birness after a lorry got stuck, while the Laurencekirk to Stonehaven stretch of the road was also badly affected by snow and ice.
Conditions also caused problems on the Peterhead and Foveran stretch of the road, while drivers struggled on the icy road between Cruden Bay and Newburgh.
A total of 15 schools throughout the Shire were closed to pupils, while passengers at Aberdeen Airport also faced lengthy delays to flights.
Police warned drivers to take extra care on the roads as more snow was expected over the weekend and icy conditions returning to the area at the start of this week.
Motorists were advised to fit winter tyres to their vehicles and to check belts, hoses and fluid levels before setting off on their journey.
Keep an extra container of antifreeze and windscreen washer fluid in your car and keep a snowbrush and ice scraper in the car. Have a second scraper handy as they break easily when you’re dealing with ice. A small shovel may be helpful if you are expecting lots of snow.
Keep vital emergency gear in the car. A warm blanket, sufficient water and food, a torch, phone charger and additional warm clothing can help you get through an emergency breakdown.
