Businesspeople in Peterhead have hailed Scottish Week as a great success, saying the week of events and activities helped bring in customers to the town’s shops.

Following the annual Scottish Week, the Buchan Observer visited a number of shops in the town centre to speak to business-owners.Feedback on trading during Scottish Week was generally positive, with a number of firms saying business was brisk during the week.

But a number of shop-keepers noted that visitors often stayed outside to enjoy the weather and watch the attractions, rather than spend their money inside the shops.

However, all those the Buchanie spoke to agreed there was a fantastic buzz in the town centre during the course of the week.

Commenting on Scottish Week trading, Derek Donald of Donald’s, Peterhead, said: “We’re happy that Scottish Week brought some extra people into the town and into our store.

“There was some extra movement in the store and there were lots of people returning to the town which was great to see,” he added.

Karen Spence from the Kup-Cake coffee shop, commented: “It was quieter during Trades fortnight. But things certainly picked up during Scottish Week.

“This is our first Scottish Week at Kup-Cake and it was lovely meeting all the visitors. Our loyal, local customers came to visit during Scottish Week as well as people from Canada, Germany, South Africa, France and also Cornwall.”

Ian Sutherland of Something Special said: “We always look forward to Scottish Week. It was particularly good this year. The staff enjoyed it and got involved with the activities, including the marinathon and treasure hunt.”

Claire Small, from the town’s Symposium coffee shop added: “Saturday was particularly busy for us. There was the parade just outside the shop along Queen Street and when the rain came on we had a sudden rush of customers.

“The afternoons during Scottish Week were definitely busier than usual which was great,” she added.
