Something fishy going on at butchers
Skipper John Buchan and Butcher Robert Mortimer from R Coutts & Son with the new fresh fish counter
PETERHEAD butcher R Coutts & Son began a new venture on Friday - selling fresh fish thanks to local fishing boats.
Butcher Robert Mortimer said: “The fishermen have supported us throughout the years and my boss Kevin said we would like to support them back.”
The idea came about only three weeks ago and skipper John Buchan said: “Two days ago I got a call and luckily my boat was coming in the next morning.”
All the fish being sold is fresh from the North Sea and in some cases, less than a mile from shore. Each day, fresh fish will be available from different boats.
The packaging shows information including the date of production and the area it was caught.
John said: “The fish isn’t being sold in competition, it is complementing the beef.
“I am delighted to see the fish here and although it took a bit of organising I hope it takes off. You know where this fish was caught unlike the supermarkets, they can’t tell you where their fish comes from.”
Robert believes sales will be positive as he said: “Plenty of people have come in, seen and spoken about it, this is day one but already sales are encouraging.”
John added: “This is for the Scottish Fishing Industry, it has been hit hard enough due to people buying imports.”
