Organic recycling legislation looms

A leading North-east organics recycling firm has invested £250,000 in new lorries to strengthen its specialist food waste collection service.

Keenan Recycling, based at New Deer in Aberdeenshire, which transforms food and garden waste into compost, currently has three food waste lorries and has invested in two new vehicles.

Increasing the fleet will also help companies comply with the new zero waste regulations, which requires all businesses producing more than 50kg of food waste per week to separate this from landfill waste by the end of this year. By January 2016, any businesses producing more than just 5kg of food waste per week will need to recycle it.

The organics recycling company launched the commercial food waste collection scheme in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire in 2010, becoming the first company in Scotland offering organisations the opportunity to recycle items such as leftover food, coffee grounds, cups and paper towels on a commercial basis.

“Managing Director of Keenan Recycling, Grant Keenan, said: “The investment will allow us to collect an additional 80 tonnes of food waste per week and comes at an important time as businesses prepare for new regulations.”
