Richard Baker MSP visits VG Willox.

North-east MSP Richard Baker visited V.G. Willox today as part of the Forum of Private Businesses ‘Business Buddy’ scheme, a project which aims to keep politicians in touch with companies in their constituencies.

Mr Baker heard from husband and wife team Vincent and Angela Willox, who own the company near Crimond, that it had recently won a number of contracts, including one for work to replace windows at Banff Academy and another to refurbish part of Banff swimming pool.

Commenting during the visit, Mr Baker said: “It has been very helpful to speak to Angela and Vincent today. It is great to hear that V.G. Willox have been able to secure contracts for the projects in Banff.

“In the North-east we can’t be complacent. In the Scottish Parliament a bill is due to be brought forward by the end of the year on procurement and I would like to see a change in the procurement rules so that local businesses win more local contracts. I would also like to see less bundling of contracts,” he added.

Proprietor Vincent Willox added: “A lot of outside companies are coming in, which is creating an unlevel playing field. Where possible, I would like to see a higher percentage of work to go to local people when contracts are being tendered. I would really like to see politicians act on this.”
