Macduff Shellfish sets sight on US

Hot on the heels of acquiring the UK’s largest scallop fishing fleet, Macduff Shellfish, based in Mintlaw, is looking to the US as it continues its expansion plans.

The UK’s largest shellfish processor is set to exhibit for the first time at The International Boston Seafood Show and Seafood Processing America held between March 10-12. The company’s stand will form part of Scottish Development International’s Pavilion.

Roy Cunningham, managing director of Macduff Shellfish, said: “While we trade predominantly in Europe, we see opportunities to build a customer base in the US primarily in scallops and prawns and view Boston as a stepping stone to help us achieving that goal. We’re looking forward to building our connections through the Show.”

In December, the business acquired Scott Trawlers, giving it ownership of the UK’s largest scallop fishing fleet.

The purchase, a first for Macduff Shellfish in acquiring a whole fleet of fishing vessels, brought together two major players in the shellfish industry and enables greater integration through the scallop catching, processing, sales and marketing process.

Earlier last year Roy Cunningham took up the MD mantle at Macduff Shellfish as the MD and chairman roles, held by Euan Beaton, were split. Roy ran the Young’s Seafood-owned operation, Macrae Edinburgh, which was dedicated to supplying UK retailer Waitrose, for ten years.

Both initiatives form part of an ambitious plan by Macduff Shellfish to double the size of its business in the next five years.

Euan Beaton, chairman of Macduff Shellfish, added: “Over the last 10 years we’ve quadrupled the business. In the next five years I’d like us to double it again through entering new markets such as the US, acquiring other businesses and achieving organic growth, including diversifying into other shellfish categories.”

Macduff Shellfish will be exhibiting at Booth 2253 at the Show which is held at Boston Exhibition & Conference Center.
