BUSINESS woman Shelia Priest is counting the cost of repairs after her holiday cottages in Boddam were ruined by the storms in December.

The two cottages received substancial water damage and as a result, a number of walls have had to be repaired and re-painted due to bubbling, carpets have had to be removed and also furniture and decorations have had to be thrown out.

One cottage felt the force of the storms after a freak wave crashed down, forcing the living room window to smash. Due to this, water began to pour in causing damage throughout the building.

Any items that were saved have since been placed in the kitchen of the cottage while painters and decorators try and get it back to the way it was.

The cottages have been without heat after the main boiler was twisted and knocked about by the storms. The fuel tank has also been ripped up and will need to be replaced.

Sheila said: “I had to cancel and refund bookings over Christmas and New Year. We have been fully closed while we assessed and cleared the damage.

“We had to turn people away - there was nothing we could do.

“It is devastating because obviously the reason we are here is for people to stay and we have had people from all over the world coming here but they have not been allowed to.”

Looking to the future, Sheila is optimistic: “We are looking to open again in February. My sons are plumbers so I’m looking to get the heating up and running and get a new biomass boiler fitted.”
