Fish projects reel in £334k of funding

Seven Aberdeenshire European Fisheries Fund (AEFF) projects have been awarded grants worth a total of over £334,000, as part of a programme to create sustainable development in the region’s fisheries areas.

The projects, which incorporate adding value to seafood produce, eco-tourism, skills development, infrastructure improvements and the promotion of fisheries heritage, were awarded funding at this month’s meeting of the Aberdeenshire Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG).

The AEFF, which was formally launched in Aberdeenshire in March, awards grants to fisheries related projects which demonstrate innovation, increase community capacity and improve economic output in Aberdeenshire’s fisheries areas.

It is financed by the European Commission and administered locally by the FLAG partnership, of which Aberdeenshire Council is the lead partner

The successful projects in the second round of funding are designed to revitalise Aberdeenshire’s fisheries areas and provide an important legacy for fishing communities.

These include a project to deepen Cairnbulg Harbour, allowing for the installation of an additional 20 berths, the redevelopment of a lifeboat shed in Johnshaven into a heritage hub and new facilities and equipment for the Scottish Marine Safari.

In addition, Portsoy’s Scottish Traditional Boat Festival will continue to promote the maritime heritage of the area by restoring buildings within the harbour area, while an unused fisheries building at Whitehills Marina will be transformed into a new seafood restaurant.
