THE impressive redevelopment of old houses on Peterhead’s Threadneedle Street and St Andrew Street has been recognised by Aberdeenshire Council.

The buildings, redeveloped by the National Trust for Scotland, received the accolade at this year’s Design Awards - one of six entries to receive Distinctions at the biennial event, - which was held at Haddo House on Thursday.

Others included the Turra Coo in Turriff; the Huntly Arms Hotel; Mill of Eslie in Strachan; Westerton Wood in Aboyne and The Goat Shed in Tarves.

Westerton Wood was the outstanding winner of the evening and took the top prize of the Ian Shepherd Award for the quality of its execution and its positive impact on the wider environment.

Judges said the self-built residential property, which combined a red corrugated iron roof, locally sourced stone and larch cladding, set a “benchmark” for future projects in Aberdeenshire. Ian was principal archaeologist at Aberdeenshire Council, who sadly passed away in May 2009 and the new award category was established in his memory in 2010.

The awards are aimed at promoting good design and celebrating the work of architects, builders, artists and other professionals in producing designs of exceptional merit and quality within Aberdeenshire.

Site visits took place in July to the 28 shortlisted entries the length of Aberdeenshire by a judging panel of architects, artists and councillors.

Councillor Peter Argyle, chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee and of the judging panel, said: “The standard of entries we received for this year’s awards was exceptionally high, and as a result, the judging panel felt it appropriate to give the accolade of Distinction to double the number of entrants to 2010.”
