Auchnagatt WRI meet with Longside farmer

Liz Smith welcomed members and visitors to Auchnagatt WRI’s January meeting.

The speaker for the evening was a local farmer Mr Neil Godsman from Longside. Neil gave the ladies a fascinating account of how he got involved in farming in Estonia from 1992 to the present day.

He explained how the project had started with students from Estonia coming to Scotland for three months at Harvest time, including the Headmaster from the College who discovered there was more money to be made working on a Scottish farm in 3 months than an entire year in the College.

In 1998 Neil bought farm land in Estonia and over the years has transformed this run down dairy and farm into a modern, efficient business employing many local people.

The ladies also got a quick photographic tour of towns and countryside to give us all a glimpse and understanding of life in Estonia

Neil then kindly stayed to judge the competitions as follows:

Double Iced Shortbread: 1st Liz Smith.

Whisky Glass: 1st Helen Thomson; 2nd Hilda Brown; 3rd Liz Smith

Flower of the Month: 1st Rosaline Smith; 2nd Liz Smith; 3rd Isobel Dickie

After refreshments, the raffle and some brief discussion of business, Helen Thomson thanked everyone for a most enjoyable evening

The next WRI meeting will take place on Thursday February 9 at Auchnagatt Hall at 7.30pm. All members and visitors welcome.
