Aldi has announced the sale of its site at the former Kirkburn Mill in Peterhead.
After several years of speculation about the future of the land, Graham Nicolson, Aldi’s Property Director in Scotland, said the firm was to market the site.
He said: “Aldi has a clear strategy for developing the sites which we own in Scotland. We currently operate five stores in the north-east and are actively pursuing suitable sites in this region.
“Having listened to the concerns of the local community, and because our resources are currently committed to building stores elsewhere in Scotland, it isn’t appropriate to leave such a prominent site in Peterhead vacant any longer.
“The Peterhead site will be put on the market with immediate effect and Aldi will continue to oversee the site until a buyer is found.”
Only two weeks ago the Buchanie reported a local councillor slamming Aldi for its continued delay over its Kirkburn Mill development.
Councillor Stephen Smith had been trying to find out what Aldi’s position on the site was for the supermarket after it failed to respond to his numerous letters and emails.
At a recent meeting of Peterhead Community Council the subject of Aldi was raised once again, but Cllr Smith could only say that he was still in the dark over the supermarket’s plans for the prime town centre site.
Speaking to the Buchanie last month, Cllr Smith said: Aldi stated that they would make a decision on the future of the Kirkburn site by the end of April. Unfortunately, they have not responded to any of my e-mails or letters seeking information on what has been decided.
“It is not acceptable for a company of their standing to treat the people of Peterhead in this manner and continue to keep them in the dark as to their intentions.
“The Kirkburn site is a prime location on the approach to the town centre and has great potential. Unfortunately, at the moment Aldi seem intent on keeping it as a wasteland.”
The Buchanie wants to know what you want to see on the site.
Should it be retail, should it be leisure or a combination of both?
