Academy pupils ‘best newcomers’ in contest

PETERHEAD Academy pupils have been named as ‘Best Newcomers’ in a national engineering competition.

The Electric Car Challenge, which saw around 500 Scottish school pupils racing the electric cars they designed and constructed, has been hailed a resounding success.

Pupils from around 40 primary and secondary schools - from Grampian, Dundee and Angus as well as Glasgow, Highlands, Ullapool and Dunoon - competed on the race track of Grampian Transport Museum, Alford recently.

The national project tasks pupils to design, construct, drive and race an electric car. The national project dates back to 1999 and has been held in Scotland since 2006, when just three cars were involved.

Sir Robert Smith, MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, who presented the prizes to the winners, said: “It was great to see the wide range of designs the teams had come up with.

“They showed a lot of enthusiastic commitment in taking on the challenge. I am sure the experience will help them develop their science skills in a practical way.

“I would particularly like to thank the organisers and volunteers for all their hard work in making the day possible.”

Winners GRM Young Engineers Club, runners-up North Highland Young Engineers Club, and third-placed Ullapool High School will now go forward to represent Scotland at the national event at Goodwood in October.
