Hearts travelled to Dyce without ten players due to suspensions, work commitments and injuries.
Despite this depleted squad the players gave a decent account of themselves against the second-placed Juniors but will be disappointed with the way in which they conceded the goals.
Hearts started brightly when Porter and Barbour combined but the
keeper held Porter's shot.
Dyce went ahead with their first attack when a cross from Reid found Rae who knocked the ball down to Cheyne who netted from close range.
Hearts' Kevin Park won possession and went through the Dyce defence but his shot did not trouble Buckley in goal.
Dyce almost went two-up when a Rae turn and shot just evaded Mark Simpson's right hand post.
Porter had hard luck when he beat Webster and tried a snapshot but it went wide. Just on half-time Dyce did go 2-0 up when a Kirkwood through ball found Rae who beat Simpson to the ball and slotted the ball home.
Hearts came out looking to pull a goal back and it came when a Barbour corner wasn't cleared and Scott Porter slid the ball home to make it 2-1.
Dyce then had the ball in the net but Rae was adjudged offside. Hearts thought they had equalised when Barbour shot home but the linesman had his flag up to disallow the 'equaliser'.
Hearts were holding their own but a soft free kick given by the ref saw Reid float over a good cross and Stewart Rose, unchallenged, heading home to put Dyce up 3-1. The visitors were now chasing the game and were caught out when a Glendinning free kick was cleared and Dyce broke up the park for Cheyne to shoot past Simpson to make it 4-1.
Bbut Hearts were not finished and Scott Barbour was taken down in the box by Murray and he shot the resultant penalty home to make it 4-2.
Hearts tried to get more goals in the closing stage with Park coming close and also Barbour testing Bucklay but it was all too late.
Next game is a Superleague encounter away to Longside.
