PETERHEAD will host its first ever international cultural event at the weekend where Scottish traditions will be mixed with an Eastern European and African flavour.
The event, on Saturday, will be held in the town's Rescue Hall from 6pm to 8pm, and if successful it is hoped to make it an annual date on the Blue Toon calendar.

Organised by Aberdeenshire Council and the Migrant Workers Association, the cultural
event will feature music, dancing and singing from Scotland, Latvia, Lithuania, Nigeria, Poland and Russia, and everyone is invited to go along and join in the fun.

Speaking to the Buchan Observer last week, chairman of the MWA, Mindaugas Zaleckas, said: "This event came about as a result of work with the Eastern European population of Peterhead, most of whom were very keen to know more about Scotland and its traditions.

"They have formed an association called the Migrant Workers Association which supports diverse cultural and social events from all, as it recognises the importance of the contribution of migrant workers to the community life of Scotland.

"In keeping with the interests of the migrant community, the association will promote the cultural life of Scotland and its history and traditions."

Mr Zaleckas said the cultural event will be opened by Scottish musicians playing traditional songs followed by performances from representatives of Latvia, Lithuania, Nigeria, Poland and possibly Russia.

"The second part of the evening will give everyone the opportunity to try out dances from these countries, and there will also be a chance to taste some traditional food from Scotland," he said.

"This will be the first event of its kind in Peterhead and depending on its popularity we may be able to host other events highlighting traditions of different cultures. We expect the event to be well attended," he added.

Those going along can pay the admission price of £1 at the door on the night. Children are admitted free of charge.
