A PETERHEAD man has criticised Aberdeenshire Council workers for failing to deal with a nasty damp problem in his local-authority-owned home.
Philip McLean of Clerkhill Place has been living with the damp for more than a year, but despite several attempts to contact the council he claims nothing has been done.

Shop worker Philip (26), has lived by himself at the property for the past th
ree years. He first noticed problems with damp in a fitted wardrobe in his bedroom, a year after he moved in.

After several failed attempts to deal with the problem himself he turned to the council for help, but claims he was fobbed off by council officers each time he called.

Explaining the situation to the Buchanie, Philip said the council had really let him down: "There was no damp for the first year I lived here but then it started to appear in my bedroom. I've been reporting it to the council for about a year and a half and they keep telling me that someone will be in touch, they always say the same thing but then nothing happens. It's a terrible situation and something I'm always worrying about.

"The damp actually used to be even worse than it is now, with the entire area being completely black, I've scrubbed the area myself with bleach, and I've even bought special mould cleaner, which is why it looks a bit better now. I've tried my best but its just not acceptable, the council should do something about it," he said.

"I'm not the only one with this problem, some of my neighbours are suffering with damp in their houses too."

A spokesperson from Aberdeenshire Council defended their actions, saying that though complaints had been lodged by Mr Mclean, it was a lack of access that had stopped the repair work going ahead.

The council worker told the Buchanie that despite repeated attempts by the Clerk of Works to contact Mr Mclean, dating back to February of this year, they had no success.

They said they would be happy to send a housing officer out to look at the problem, if Mr Mclean could re-contact them.
